Dozens of children and plenty of nonprofit representatives lobbied for summer camp funding yesterday at the New York City Council’s Committee on Youth Services budget hearing. They also seeded a social media storm, captured in this Twitter moment.
At stake is funding for summer programming to serve more than 34,000 middle school students. Programs face $20 million in budget cuts in Mayor Bill de Blasio’s latest proposed budget, according to a May 8 press release from the Citizens’ Committee for Children
“A key aspect of economic equity is high quality, comprehensive educational programming for our children,” Jennifer Jones-Austin, executive director, FPWA, said in the press release.

Several hundred seniors are expected to rally at New York City hall today. A press release from Live On New York states that the 23rd annual Aging Advocacy Day will urge city lawmakers to support senior centers and other community-based services. The older adult population will double by 2030, according to the press release, which urges more funding at a time when the Trump Administration is expected to enact cuts to senior programs. The rally is scheduled for 11 a.m.
The New York State Office of Mental Health recognized the nonprofit Children of Promise at a May 8 event in Albany. The New York City-based organization received the honor for its work serving children of incarcerated people, according to a press release.
“Its model removes the stigma of psychotherapeutic services and makes treatment accessible to more than 350 families in Kings County and the surrounding area,” reads the press release.
The Girl Scouts of Greater New York recently got a boost at Cipriani 42nd Street as their national organization gets down to a recruiting battle vs. BSA, formerly the Boy Scouts of America, which began admitting girls last year. The annual gala for New York City’s Girl Scouts raised $1.2 million at the April 30 gala supporting programming that serves more than 29,000 girls throughout the city, according to a press release.
