The Slant: Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino on the new landscape for Republicans
Rob Astorino took on Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the 2014 race for governor, but the political landscape has changed a lot since then, especially for Republicans. The Westchester county executive joined the Slant podcast, where he didn’t shy from attacking Cuomo. When asked how he navigates being a Republican executive in a majority-Democrat county, Astorino contrasted himself with his onetime opponent.
“Unlike the governor, who has no backbone and puts his wet finger into the air to see which way the wind is blowing, I will stand on principle on what I believe in, and when I think something is wrong, I’ll say it,” he said, giving his longtime support for keeping Indian Point open as an example.
Astorino, who’s considering another run for governor in 2018, also talked about how close he was to being Donald Trump’s HUD secretary and his expectations for the actual pick, Ben Carson, and shared ideas on how to fix the country’s immigration system.
