Nonprofit JCCA raised more than $800,000 at a May 16 gala. More than 250 people attended the midtown Manhattan event, which featured a performance by jazz singer Nicole Henry. Guests included New York City Administration for Children’s Commissioner David Hansell, Assemblyman Thomas J. Abinanti, Mt. Pleasant Chief of Police Paul Oliva, and Mt. Pleasant Cottage School Union Free School District Superintendent David Bernsley, according to a spokesperson.

 

The nonprofit Common Justice has a new video series that features the stories of six survivors of violence. The aim is to show how law enforcement, prosecutors and jail fail such people and how the found healing elsewhere. Screenings have occurred at 25 cities across the U.S., according to a press release.

 

The Fresh Air Fund raised $1.7 million at a May 2 gala. More than 500 people attended the New York City event, which honored the Sulzberger newspaper publishing family, according to a press release.

 

Domestic violence services nonprofit Safe Horizon honored Deadpool 2 star Terry Crews at a May 15 event. He discussed the experience of watching his dad abuse his mom in a speech at the event, which raised $1.5 million.
