A new book examines the legal and human rights issues surrounding migrant children. New York Law School Professor Lenni Benson is the co-editor of “Protecting Migrant Children,” which offers case studies from the U.S. and across the world. Benson is the the founder of the nonprofit Safe Passage Project, which offers free legal representation to children and teens in immigration court. In recognition of that work and her other efforts as an academic and advocate, Benson will receive the Child 10 award from the Sweden-based Hugo Stenbeck Foundation, according to a Nov. 14 press release.

 

Donna Corrado is stepping down as New York City commissioner of the Department for the Aging. Corrado will step down at the end of the month after five years leading the agency, which oversees a wide variety of services oriented toward seniors. Caryn Resnick, deputy commissioner of external affairs, will become acting commissioner, effective on Dec. 1, according to a Nov. 19 press release.

Corrado had worked at the agency since 2002, when she was appointed as a deputy commissioner. She previously served as the executive director of Family and Community Services, and executive director of Caring Community, according to the press release.

"It has been the highlight of my professional career to lead DFTA under Mayor de Blasio,” she said in the press release. “Our collective efforts have advanced the senior center network, strengthened core services and made New York a much better place to grow older.”

 

Lenox Hill Neighborhood House has received a $117,284 contract with the New York City Department for the Aging. The money will fund senior services, according to the City Record. Bergen Basin Community Development Corporation dba Millennium Development Corporation will deliver similar services, per a $250,000 contract with the department.

 

The Carmel-based CoveCare Center has one of the top doctors in Westchester County. That’s according to Westchester Magazine, which named Jonathan Bauman, chief medical officer at the nonprofit mental health care provider, as one of the best doctors in the area in the field of psychiatry, according to a Nov. 19 press release from the nonprofit. Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. is urging the Trump administration to reconsider a proposed change to the definition of a “public charge.” The administration is proposing to expand the definition in a way that could jeopardize the eligibility of many immigrants to gain permanent residency if they accept certain social services.
