Western NY gets more funding to fight homelessness

Western New York has received more than $13 million in federal grants to fight homelessness. More than a dozen nonprofits and municipalities will receive the funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, WKBW Buffalo reports. This will support supportive housing in Erie County and Rapid Rehousing Program in Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties.

 

The NYU Furman Center has a new executive director. Matt Murphy will take on the position on April 15. He currently serves as a deputy commissioner at the New York City Department of Housing Preservation. His portfolio includes the Office of Housing Policy and the Office of Strategic Operations and Analytics, according to a press release.

 

SCO Family of Services has received an $18.7 million contract from the New York City Administration for Children’s Services. The money will fund foster care services, according to the City Record. The Children’s Aid Society will provide domestic violence prevention services on behalf of the agency, per a $9.5 million contract.

 

Carter Burden Network has graduated the second class of its digital bootcamp for seniors. Nine people completed the “Beyond Basics” course at the nonprofit’s Lehman Village Senior Program in East Harlem

The goal was to train them in the ins and outs of email, social media, and online shopping to “grow as productive and self-sufficient members of the community,” according to a press release. An inaugural contingent of seven computer-savvy seniors completed the course last year, according to a spokeswoman.


A new report examines how Mayor Bill de Blasio’s proposed budget affects summer employment programs. The Summer Youth Employment Program will receive a $30.8 million increase under the mayor’s proposal  to cover the increase of the minimum wage to $15 per hour and to maintain a current level of 70,000 slots. The program as a whole will receive a total of $128.6 million for fiscal year 2020 but some uncertainties are looming, according to the analysis by the Independent Budget Office.
